Combined General VLOS Certificate & A2 Certificate of Competence

THE CERTIFICATION

Our combined certification course gives you the best of both worlds: operate under your CAA permission when you need to; fly under your A2 CofC for those fast, simple tasks.

Your GVC will allow you to:

    • apply to the CAA for a standard Operational Authorisation (drones up to 25kg, 50m separation from uninvolved people, 150m separation distance from places used by people doesn't apply - residential, recreational, industrial, commercial areas)
    • add specialist modules to extend and enrich your operational capability (e.g. EVLOS / BVLOS)
    • fly with all your UK permissions across Europe

Note: You are allowed to to apply for your permission before 31/12/2020

Transitional Period (December 31st 2020 to December 31st 2022)

From the 31st of December 2020 an A2 Certificate of Competence allows you to:

    • fly your drone in the A2 (Open) subcategory (drones up to 2kg) and the A1 subcategory (drones up to 500 grams)
    • fly without the usual 150m separation distance from places used by people (residential, recreational, industrial, commercial areas)
    • fly your sub-2kg drone to within 50m of uninvolved people (A2 subcategory)
    • fly your sub-500g drone with no restrictions on proximity to uninvolved people (but not directly overhead) (A1 subcategory)

Continuing Period (December 31st 2020 onwards)

From the 31st of December 2020 an A2 Certificate of Competence allows you to:

    • fly your drone in the A2 (Open) subcategory (appropriately C-marked drones up to 4kg) and the A1 subcategory (appropriately C-marked drones up to 900 grams)
    • fly without the usual 150m separation distance from places used by people (residential, recreational, industrial, commercial areas)
    • fly your sub-4kg C-marked drone to within 30m of uninvolved people (reduced to 5m when in slow speed mode) (A2 subcategory)
    • fly your sub-900g C-marked drone with no restrictions on proximity to uninvolved people (but not directly overhead) (A1 subcategory)

Add to this the freedom to operate a drone commercially without any special CAA permissions from 31st December 2020 and the world of lightweight drones is about to get very interesting!

THE COURSE
Enrolling in our CAA approved combined course is inexpensive, fast and available to anyone. You'll study four core modules (Flight Performance, Flight Operations (introductory and intermediate) & Meteorology), each followed by a practice question bank to reinforce what you've learned. The fourth module contains practical exercises and walk-throughs and when you're ready to take your exam, you simply login, select a time and follow the set up instructions. Nothing could be simpler.

With your exam complete, you're ready to start creating your operations manual via our automated system; Flight Docs. This is a web-based tool where you can craft your manual, using a simple and intuitive interface. End-to-end it'll take a couple of hours, after which you simply submit it for review. We aim to complete the review within 48 hours.

The final part of the course is to pass your practical flight assessment. This is the only "in-person" activity and we provide you with the format and flight activities required. We have a national network of flight examiners for you to select from. You just log in to the automated booking system, select a date and time that suits you and we guide you the rest of the way.

    • With the exception of the flight assessment, 100% online & on-demand (start, pause & resume at your own pace)
    • Exams available online and on-demand, 24/7/365 [learn more]
    • Free exam retakes (98% of our students pass first time!)
    • Operations manual creation through our automated Flight Docs system [learn more]
    • Flight assessment with an examiner near you
    • Digital certification to your phone - exclusive to AV8 [learn more]
    • Unlimited, on-demand instructor support (Email, Phone, Video Call) [learn more]
